Houston, TX- April 20, 2016: Scan Systems proudly rides in BP MS 150 race on April 16th from Houston to La Grange.

The 21-person team was composed of Scan Systems employees and family members and together they raised over $16,200. “I couldn’t be happier with the turnout of this year’s event,” comments Matt Rutledge, VP/General Manager of Scan Systems. “Having a work community that is united in their passion for this cause is truly remarkable and I was honored to raise money and ride alongside such a fantastic group.”

This is Scan System’s second year participating in the MS 150 race, and it won’tbpms150 be their last. “One of the best parts about this ride and the MS150 organization is the large percentage of proceeds that goes directly to multiple sclerosis research and creating programs for those suffering with MS,” Rutledge explains. “This year I met a woman who suffered from MS, and when she found out I personally have beenriding and supporting this organization for many years, she openly thanked me and our team for helping to save her life. That is what this is all about.”

Scan Systems is proud to be one of many organizations, participants, volunteers, and sponsors who support this great cause and they can’t wait to increase fundraising goals and grow their team for next years’ race.

    The Service Side of EDM

In 1985, Scan Systems conceived, developed, and patented the very first portable EDM unit capable of producing precision

In 1985, Scan Systems conceived, developed, and patented the very first portable EDM unit capable of producing precision calibration flaws in pipe and metal materials. This equipment was immediately recognized as “THE STANDARD” against which all other products in this arena would be measured… and it continues to be so today.

Over the years, Scan Systems’ engineers and technicians have developed several generations of the original product, but there has always been a consistent focus on delivering the best and highest level of service to their customers.

“We take the service side of our business very seriously,” notes Matt Rutledge, Vice President/General Manager of Scan Systems. “We want our customers to understand that we will jump through hoops to take care of your EDM Calibration Standard needs.”

When it comes to EDM service, Scan Systems focuses on these areas:

  • Mobility: Our experienced and knowledgeable EDM technicians produce custom flaws in a variety of materials and applications on a daily basis. Typically, we provide these services in our state-of-the-art service lab located in Houston, Texas. However, since one of the most important features of our patented equipment is its mobility, we are able to provide most of our specialized services at your location, if necessary.
  • Rapid Response: Downtime is costly, and we understand that. When a calibration standard is needed to proceed with an inspection job, we realize you need a solution fast. Our team is committed to responding to our customers quickly.
  • Meeting Delivery Times: Understanding our customers’ goals and timelines is key. The timeliness of one job affects the next. With our in-house machines and custom facilities, we offer many different services for our customers. Our goal is to become a reliable, trustworthy, one-stop shop for our clients.
  • Complex Calibration Standard: Our experienced and knowledgeable EDM technicians produce custom flaws in a variety of materials and applications on a daily basis. We love challenges and our key success-driver is our flexibility. To some of our technicians, the tougher the set-up is, the better the project. We do a lot of repeat business and have an abundance of experience in routine production standards, but our real strength is tackling the unusual.

Scan Systems’ dedication to their customers can also be seen by their recent ISO 9001:(2008) certification for their quality management system and business practices. The OCTG industry does not necessarily require companies to have ISO 9001:(2008) compliant quality systems, but one of Scan Systems’ goals is to consistently send the message to their customers that they are reliable, trustworthy, innovative, and will do what it takes to take care of them.

One of the results of the 1970s oil crisis was the U.S. ban on oil exports. The national intent was to push towards energy independence while protecting the domestic economy. This occurred 40 years ago and with the current state of oil prices and our growing independence, many believe the ban has outlived its usefulness.

The goal of the ban originally was to help the economy, businesses, and consumers. Many believe the opposite has taken place over the years and that the lift will allow for a more efficient market that encourages more investments.

With the ban lifted, smaller companies and producers will have the opportunity to expand their marketplace for oil. First Titan Corp. is one company that will be positively affected. The CEO Sydney Jim states, “Right now, we’re limited in what we can do. With the ban gone, we could easily move oil to places more willing to pay a fair price. Free trade is always good business. The domestic oil and gas industry needs this legislation – it would go a long way to easing the current slump and making us more competitive, as well as greatly aiding our revenue stream.”

Shale Revolution Paused by OPEC

    Shale Revolution Paused by OPEC

“Shale producers are justifiably proud of their ability to survive the perfect storm that has hit their industry

“Shale producers are justifiably proud of their ability to survive the perfect storm that has hit their industry since the middle of 2014,” comments John Kemp of Reuters.

The hardship that has come along with the collapse in oil prices has forced shale producers to cut costs, sustain their output, and ultimately become more efficient in their operations.

With a pause in the shale revolution, the shift has gone from growth to survival.

“Some analysts question whether the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is winning its price war against high-cost producers. They point to resilience in shale production in North Dakota and Texas as evidence that OPEC’s strategy has had only limited success.”

Even though this shift has forced an improvement in operations, it does not negate the fact that shale growth is struggling causing a pause in the shale revolution. Prior to June 2014, North Dakota’s oil output was increasing at a compound rate of 2.37 percent per month. Since then, the state’s oil output has shrunk to a .38 percent increase each month.

Some say OPEC’s strategy has had only limited success. “By allowing prices to tumble, OPEC has shut in 300,000 to 500,000 bpd of probable shale production growth in North Dakota.”

OPEC’s strategy, keeping output steady and forcing countries to adjust production, has been reasonably successful. However, it doesn’t eliminate the readiness of shale producers to increase output again when prices rise from $50 to $60 or $70 per barrel, which would actually worsen oversupply in the long run.

“The revolution cannot be reversed. Techniques once mastered will not be unlearned.” Oil prices and production will eventually rise again, and due to the current situation, producers will have learned to operate at a lower cost base than before.
